Honda set out to see what happens when real-world racing meets virtual competition, pitting IndyCar driver Graham Rahal in a 2018 Civic Type R against gamer Peter Jeakins in Forza Motorsport 7—all powered by Microsoft’s mixed reality tech. Using a VRX Motion Rig, the Unity engine, and precise GPS data, they created an ultra-accurate “ghost car” mirroring the real Type R, while Rahal’s vehicle featured a custom mixed reality windshield so he could track his virtual opponent in real time. Minimizing latency and maximizing accuracy were paramount, culminating in a high-octane film capturing Rahal’s perspective as he pushed the Type R to its limits. By merging physical performance with digital innovation, Honda redefined racing—blurring the line between reality and virtual, and setting a bold new standard for tech-driven automotive experiences.
